What user are you? Identify, before you buy.
And you thought buying a smartphone was easy? Apparently not! The amount of innovation we have seen over the last one-year has taken smartphones into a completely different league. So much so that even smartphones just about 12 months old now seem archaic. And not smart enough. Worst-case scenario, not powerful enough!
Not only the hardware, the software bit has seen a huge battle as well. Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are going at it hammer and tongs. Research in Motion is trying its best to make the Blackberry OS as slick as the rivals. Microsoft is hoping that the Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) update will revive its fortunes. And the same story with Symbian- Anna gets a service pack as well but the real wait is on for the Belle.
However, if you are in the market to buy a smartphone for yourself, what do you buy? Well, first you need to figure out what phone fits you best. Which is why we have divided this buying guide in terms of user demographic, making it easier for you to identify which category you fall in.
Basic user/ Old- school type
Best OS for you: Symbian and Blackberry still rock!
- Familiar UI makes getting used to new phone quicker
- No steep learning curve
- You wont get lost in the application ecosystem!
If you are a bit like my dad and still believe that the smartphone is primarily a phone and believe familiarity is a critical criterion, you would be best suited off buying either a Symbian smartphone, or a Blackberry. What you get with both these OSes is a UI (user interface) that is relatively similar to the previous versions, and even the versions before that- for they have been around for donkeys’ years! For someone who doesn’t want a smartphone to be a learning curve, or isn't willing to spend time getting the hang of a newer OS, familiarity is the best option. The app ecosystem isn't very wide for Symbian and Blackberry, but then again, we don’t assume you would be interested in downloading too many apps anyway!
Here as well, you will get a choice of touchscreen only, touchscreen+ QWERTY and QWERTY only phones.
The absolute geek/ Lives on ‘nightly’ builds
Best OS for you: Android mostly, and partly Apple iOS.
Why we recommend this:
- Completely customizable software
- Phone can be shifted to “unofficial” OS builds, offering maybe better performance
- Can add more functionality to unofficial OS with apps
- Over-clocking the smartphone is becoming a rage!
It can also be done with the iOS, following a simpler process. But then again, with Android, you get a wider variety of phones at multiple price points.
The no nonsense user/ no compromise on user experience either
Best OS for you: Apple iOS. And why not check out the Windows Phone Mango?
- iOS sets the benchmark in terms of user experience
- WP7 isn't far behind, from what we have experienced with WP 7.5
- Touchscreen experience will be the best around
- You get a lot of apps as well, if you want to use them.
Well, the iOS (okay, Android fanboys will probably be sharpening their knives at the moment!) does offer possibly the best blend of functionality, performance and a slick user experience. If you want a phone that does everything, we suggest you check out the Apple iPhone. With the 3GS starting around Rs 19k, the entry price barrier has come down considerably.
Windows Phone 7, post the Mango update, does look like a very neat package. While it is still to really catch on, we quite like the updated OS. The fact that the performance of the OS isn’t lagging, even on a phone with 512MB of RAM does help a graphic intensive, yet easy to navigate UI.
The Business user/ Black suit serious types
Best OS for you: Blackberry mostly, and partly Symbian.
Why we recommend this:
- Physical QWERTY keypad is an absolute must for you.
- An added touchscreen capability is okay, but not a must have.
- Blackberry devices handle emails the best, arguably.
What you want is simplicity but will not compromise on features. You have the daily staple diet of emails, lots of messages, a bit of web browsing and a considerable amount of calls. Ideally, a phone with a QWERTY keypad will suit you the best - immense help when typing those long mails and messages.

There is a gross misconception with the people that if we talk on a cellphone while lightning then we might get killed. This is true for some cases but not for all. After a research study, some experts have come to the conclusion that the phones which have a metallic body can struck with lightning & can cause lightning death.
Few years ago in USA, a boy was mowing his lawn listening to his iPod & a lightning stuck him. His ears started bleeding & he was in a serious condition because the nerve from the ear to the brain was also effected with the shock. Now the only reason behind this was the metallic body of his iPod. So this is not compulsory that you need a phone for a lightning death. While talking on the phone, the electricity won't travel through the network signal because charges never travel through waves.
Florida is the “lightning capital of America,” with more thunderstorms and lightning strikes than any other state. Annually, Florida leads the nation in deaths caused by lightning, with 15% of the total deaths occurring within the state. In terms of per capita deaths caused by lightning strikes, however, Florida ranks fifth. Leading the pack is New Mexico, followed by Wyoming, Arkansas, Colorado, and then Florida. The safest states are Alaska, Hawaii and California.
Lightning deaths are rare events. On the total list of the most common causes of accidental deaths in the U.S., lightning deaths aren’t even in the top 100 causes. You’re more likely to die from a slip in your bath tub, choking on a steak, or being bitten by a wasp.

Cricket was always called 'a gentleman's game'. But I don't think it is a gentleman's game anymore. After recent news on spot-fixing during IPL-6 is really shocking 'cause three of very good cricketers were involved in this. One of them is very well-known bowler of our nation Sreesanth. I don't understand why do they need to do this when they know all the after-effects of this & they earn a hell lot of money with so much fame as a free gift offer! This is not the first time of match fixing in which a good player is involved. Eminent players like Mohd. Azaharuddin have already blackened their own image in cricketing world with this.
Among them there are many other players like our 'the God' Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly to name a few are just clean like a crystal. They were the real gentlemen who played this game with a real enthusiasm. I remember back in 90s, Sachin went to Ganguly's room when the team was out on a tour & said that he has heard the next day's match has been fixed. Ganguly told him not to worry. They will open batting first & try their level best in not getting out. They'll stay put & make as many runs as possible. Bookies can fix whatever they want to but these two won't let it happen. This is what transpired the game. Twenty four hours later Sachin & Ganguly both hit centuries & India won the match. These were the legends who gave everything for the game. Deserving thing happened to Sreesanth & his fellows who were involved in this. They should be severely punished for insulting India on a global platform. A note to all cricketers:
Play with our heart & keep alive the spirit of cricket in India.
!! Sale !! Buy one get one free !! Buy one get one free !! Sale !!
Every Indian must be well aware with this phrase & why not this is what it attracts a simple middle-class Indian every-time they go for shopping. Actually this offer usually works in our country (Yes! You're thinking right, Indians are actually foolish). The clever salespersons to sell out their old stuff fast they put a signboard in front of their stores called "Buy one get one free". Although this fact is known by us all but still the 'free' thing has some different attraction. That's a biggest problem with the Indians. The free thing leads to a bigger problem then.
Whenever we get something for free, we all just misuse it (a lot). If are getting some product for free then we buy it till out heart content whether we need it or not. Afterwards when the charm of the thing is over it goes ultimately into the dustbin. Same thing is with the resources. When people get free water, electricity or mobile connection, they just misuse it. They don't understand that the 'free' thing is just a facility not a boon or donation that we'll exploit it. Guys! this is what we do actually but we shouldn't. I don't know when will people understand the real significance of 'free'.

"HSDPA" "HSPA" "EDGE" "Adreno Cortex" "ARM" "Quad-core processor" "Dual-band"
You must have already heard of these terms for sure, isn't it?
What do we know what does this all mean & what does it directly or indirectly effects our gadget?
A review was done by Digit magazine in 2012 that most of us don't know the meaning of the above mentioned terms & many more like them but we never hesitate to buy the things which have these kind of complexities in it. So the ultimate conclusion of this is that we don't know what for we are shedding our money. A very simple question to ask, how many of us have used the GPS of our smart hand-held efficiently & independently? How many of us have done a video-conferencing from our hand-held to some other without any network fail? How many QR codes or bar codes are scanned by our phones give us a positive results?
The answer for these questions are absolutely non-affirmative. So what's the use of buying the things which we can't use properly? Are we trying to follow the west? Are we foolish to buy these?
For an instance, when we buy an iPhone in India we say that the Siri doesn't come up properly, the iMaps doesn't work, the iTunes store has nothing for India & what not we say. What does these mean?
The very childish meaning for this is the iPhone was not made for India (in general). Jobs never created that keeping in mind the 'great' telecommunication service which prevail outside US (like India). It was only meant for US not for 'us'. Not only with cellphones, this thing is applicable for TVs, computers & all other gadgets that we use.
The developing countries develop the technology for themselves not for others. The technology works there not here.
- In US, one can find Wi-Fi hotspot atleast at every public place with minimum 16MBps downloading speed & in India (leave it I don't need to say that).
- There you can get GPS networks with updated place data everywhere (even in villages). They have got 4G & 5G connections with full network everywhere. Here, do have a proper 2G signal in villages?
- There you can get over 400 HD channels on their cable TV network. Here we have hardly 20 which we get after buying some Tata Sky or Dish TV & that too after shedding money.
So guys get alerted. Google the things out & be careful while shedding your money.

Last month my friend bought a new Samsung Galaxy S3 (after drilling a big hole on his dad's pocket) & he was boasting about how the so-called smartphone which they claim to be "Designed for humans" worked & how amazing it was after all. The 1.5 GHz Quad-core Krait processor is of course amazingly fast & it allows all the hard-core applications to work almost very neatly. I too was amazed with the 'awesomeness' of the phone. After spending a handful of time exploring the phone when I returned back to my place, a thought conquered my mind. Few years ago when the first CDMA cellular phone was launched in India, we all were amazed with the telecommunication technology that time & we never thought that the technology would some reach at this peak. With due passage of time we all saw the new advent of smartphones. Day by day a new phone launched in the Indian market we were all diverted towards the new animal in the zoo. This is the thing which happens with us. We humans never get satisfied with the technology we always want some more.

Even if we buy the costliest phone in the market we'll always look towards the other predecessors. The Galaxy S3 even has a competitors at much cheaper price. They maybe not as good as the Galaxy but they are quite able to do what the other can. Then why do people run behind the costly one? Maybe its because of the brand factor. There's also a 'show-off' factor with the people. The people, whether they know about the stuff or not they always want to boast about the costly thing they possess. I don't understand people bargain for little things why don't they buy these things in which they can always have a smart buy. Try to get a cheaper phone with the same features so that when that features list gets old you can change the phone without hesitation & that won't cost you much.Let it be for an instance, there were many a options with near about same features as Galaxy S3 & remarkably much lower than its price tag like Micromax Canvas HD. Starting from watching 1080p videos to running hard-core apps what not you can do in it. No no, am not advertising the product but I am just creating an awareness to research & buy what you're buying. Don't go for the advertisements or brands. Look for your needs. Don't even compare with the features list because half of the features aren't working in India. If you're a geek & you've got enough technical knowledge of the features then you can look for them .
SO MY SUGGESTION ATLEAST GOOGLE OUT ONCE YOUR NEEDS FOR A MOBILE & LOOK FOR THE OPTIONS WHAT ARE AVAILABLE FOR YOU
